6 Largest Global Megaprojects Currently Under Construction

The world is a busy place, and it doesn't look like it's going to slow down anytime soon. As we embark on a new year, here are eight of the largest megaprojects currently under construction around the globe.

1. East Coast Rail Link

This high-speed rail line will link Singapore and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia with a cost of approximately $10 billion. The project is expected to be completed by 2027 and is designed to carry up to 250,000 passengers per day.

2. Texas Central High-Speed Railway

The Texas Central High-Speed Railway is a proposed high-speed rail line between Dallas and Houston that will be privately funded. It will have a maximum speed of 200 mph, and it's estimated to cut travel time between the two cities to 90 minutes.

3. California High-Speed Railway

The California High-Speed Rail is a high-speed rail system under construction in California. The system is expected to cost $105 billion. The first phase will link Los Angeles and San Francisco by 2029, with extensions of the system expected to serve Sacramento and San Diego by 2033.

4. Brightline Florida High-Speed Rail

The Brightline Florida High-Speed Rail is a high-speed rail line being developed in the U.S. state of Florida that will connect the cities of Orlando, Tampa, and Miami by 2023. The project will cost a grand total of $1.7 billion to complete.

5. Dubailand

Dubailand is a mega tourism, entertainment, and real estate project in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. With a budget of $5 billion, it will include an amusement park, a theme park, and resort city. Its retail city is expected to be the largest shopping center in the world with over 20 million square feet of leasable space.

6. South-North Water Transfer Project, China

The South-North Water Transfer Project, also known as the "South-to-North Diversion Project," is a series of water diversion projects that will bring more than 44 million cubic meters of fresh water from the Yangtze River in southern China to Beijing and Tianjin by 2050. The project began in 2002 and was expected to be completed by 2015. However, repeated delays pushed its completion date back several times.

Project components include three separate routes: the Central Route (from Danjiangkou Reservoir on the Han River), which started construction in 2006; the Eastern Route (from Shiluogou Reservoir), which started construction in 2010; and other parts of both routes that are still under study or have yet to begin construction.

7. Merdeka 118

Located in Malaysia, this tower will complete construction in 2023 and will be the world's second tallest building. With over 3.1 million square feet of floor area, 1.7 million of which will be for office space, visitors will have a chance to stay in one of the tower's top 17 floors—the new home for the only Park Hyatt Hotel in the country.

Conclusion

We’re excited to see that so many megaprojects are currently being built around the globe. Not only do these projects support economic growth, they also provide employment opportunities and improve infrastructure. Though they may take several years to complete, they will be worth it in the end when we see their positive impacts on society!
