Everything to Know About Saudi Arabia's "The Line"

NEOM is a massive project that will be the world's first smart city. Its purpose is to create new jobs and opportunities for the people of Saudi Arabia, and it will be a testbed for new technologies like self-driving vehicle. But what exactly is NEOM?

Here's everything you need to know about this ambitious project:

What is the NEOM project?

NEOM is the brainchild of Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince and son of Saudi King Salman. Its main destination, The Line, will be the first fully-linear city of its kind, popular referred to as a "sideways skyscraper."

The NEOM project will be built on the Red Sea coast and has been heralded as a “holistic destination that leverages [the] kingdom’s greatest strengths: nature, youthful energy and a rich heritage.” It'll cost an estimated $500 billion to complete, but Prince Mohammed says it'll be worth every penny.

Once completed, The Line's glass facade will stand at 1,650 feet tall, 656 feet wide, and 105 feet long. One side will feature an expansive view of the coast, while the opposite will reveal miles and miles of endless desert.

This city will prioritize nature in new ways

You can expect The Line to be a green city, as it is being built to prioritize nature in new ways, such as aiming to preserve 95% of its land.

The Line will also include an eco-friendly focus and a zero waste methodology which means that all its products are made from 100% recyclable materials or renewable energy with no harm to humans or animals. By using this approach, they hope to reduce pollution as well as decrease their carbon footprint by 80%.

This innovative project aims not only at improving life quality but also boosting economic development throughout Saudi Arabia by providing jobs for young people through building new technological skills such as 3D printing among others...

How will people get around?

Since there are no roads or vehicles, the city will be connected by high-speed rails. Of course, the rails will be powered by renewable energy, making them more environmentally friendly. Still, residents may not need to use these very much, as facility placements will always be no more than a 5-minute walk away.

The project will be a testbed for new technologies

Considering its innovative nature, The Line is bound to create endless opportunity for advancements. From natural ventilation systems to the capacity to hold 9 million residents, this project will be a space where new technologies can be tested and perfected.

Conclusion

If you’re interested in moving to The Line or investing in NEOM, the project is still in its early stages—so you'll have to wait a few years.

However, given its size and scope, it will likely have a massive impact on the economies of the area and the world at large. It is sure to be a testbed for new technologies that could reshape cities around the globe—and if all goes well, we could see another city like this one on an equally stunning stretch of coastline someday soon!
